UM OLHAR A DOIS

UM OLHAR A DOIS follows Meus Caminhos, a dance show which was first performed in Luxembourg in June 2010. Like Meus Caminhos, it is a non-profit production which relies on financial and non-financial contributions from a group of sponsors and the enthusiasm and dedication of everyone involved. The aim is, just like with Meus Caminhos, to offer talented dancers a chance to be involved in a fully-fledged dance production with a professional choreographer.

The success of Meus Caminhos convinced me that there is a definite need for this type of dance production. The ideas on which Meus Caminhos was built have more than proved their worth. Meus Caminhos not only showed that non-professional dancers benefit greatly from a chance to perform in a professional production as it is only through experience that they can grow as artists, but by reaching out to a wide audience, Meus Caminhos also demonstrated that dance is something everyone can enjoy.

The feedback from Meus Caminhos has encouraged me to embark on a new project with largely the same approach. Keeping with the concept that I developed when I first started working on Meus Caminhos allows me to achieve the three objectives I regard as essential: to offer my dancers a chance to get the experience they need, to fulfil my passion of conveying what I feel through my art, and last but not least, to bring dance to everyone, as I strongly feel it is something for all of us to enjoy.

UM OLHAR A DOIS is a tribute to feelings and human relations. Today, we live in a world of abundance, yet on an emotional level, many of us suffer from scarcity. We often go about our daily lives with no meaningful contact with others. Yet, this contact is the essence of our human existence. Hurrying on, we hardly look at each other, let alone touch each other.

Do we see each other? Do you see me? Do I see you? Seeing is the first step in emotional engagement and intimacy which in turn allows us to cultivate closeness and build relationships – to step closer, to make a connection, to share and to communicate. We all have a need to love and be loved, to be known and accepted by others. Without others we are incomplete with a void inside us that nothing else can fill.

Be seeing we engage in contact which leads to relationships. By looking at and really seeing one another, we are bound to feel. And when we feel we have to care. Feelings make us grow – they empower us to love, to receive and to give affection. Many of us are afraid to feel because feelings make us vulnerable. Here, trust is paramount, as it is only through mutual respect and trust that we can interact at the level of emotions.

UM OLHAR A DOIS explores these crucially important issues through the medium of dance. In UM OLHAR A DOIS I am reaching out through the body, through the beauty of its movement, through the flow of its energy and the multitude of emotions it is capable of conveying. And what I am asking is if we really see one another, and how it would be if we really did.

In UM OLHAR A DOIS, I am inviting us to give ourselves a moment to reflect – to stop for a moment and to listen, to see and to feel.
